I've only been to the Widow a couple of time's, for a few reasons... My first visit, my friend & I were there a little over 2 hour's. We waited over an hour & a half, for our food alone. It wasn't exceptionally busy, & neither of us ordered anything that required a lengthy time to prepare. In fact, he ordered a sandwich, & I ordered a cheeseburger. When our food did, finally arrive, I was extremely disappointed, to have waited all that time, for a pre-made frozen patty. I believe it's a little pricey as well (a plain burger was 9$). We both left feeling very underwhelmed, by the food, & service. On my second visit the food had improved. The prices & time it took for service (20 minutes & several reminders before they brought our beverages), hadn't changed much. So if you're looking for a quick, & frugal spot to eat...keep looking. If you're looking for atmosphere, however, it's great for that.
Pub and bar food are my favorite, and in southern IL our options are really limited for this type of food. When this place opened I was really excited because it was exactly what this area was missing.
Great burgers! Nice little selection of local craft beers. Service can stumble a bit but nothing too terrible.
So after it opened I ate there a few times and I was under whelmed. Something was always lacking. Service was just not as good as it could have been. They would run out of food. The food just did not have that "wow" factor. Even the AYCE wings were just muh. It was a place I wanted to love, but could not. I stopped going and swore off the place.
Had a cheeseburger and French dip both were delicious, for my tastes I prefer the French dip. The atmosphere is nice and the craft beer choices are local but limited. The onion rings we're in a almost funnel cake batter and definitely homemade. The season fries were delicious as well, I could not pick between the two because both are amazing in their own standings.
So recently I heard they had gone through some management changes. I notice a new direction with their food. New 'Burger of the Day' items being offered. Each day of the week a specialty gourmet burger was offered. They all sounded amazing.
Me and the wife go there for lunch to give it another try. One word: "Wow". The food and service was simply second to none. We went on a Friday and the burger of the day was 'The Hedonist". Simply put it was the best burger I have ever had. My wife loved her buffalo chicken salad. Great local beer selection on tap, and the beers are served in thick tall mason jars which was a really nice touch.
This is a gorgeous bar with an outdoor patio that often features live music and other events. A few of the drinks and the menu leaves something to be desired but as far as food goes, what they offer is good. Bartenders are attentive and helpful.
